Gannett: The Incredible Shrinking Newspapers
Sep 26th, 2007 by Dan Blank
Gannett newspapers are getting smaller and smaller:
“After completing a two-year conversion of its 85 daily papers from 52-inch web size to 48-inch, Gannett Co. Inc. is conducting a national review for a possible second size cut to 44-inch web.”
I suspect that as soon as the cut downs are completed the paper companies come up with new reasons to raise costs. It seems to me that their money would be better spent buying a newsprint manufacturer like Kruger or Bowater. The funny thing is that these presses cannot reduce their cutoff length. Imagine your notebook paper measuring 8.5″x8″ instead of 8.5″x11″. Advertisers are already up in arms about the rising cost of newspaper ads in a shrinking medium.
…what to do, what to do. Oh yeah! The internet!
