Totally agree with your concept, Dan and Paul, but it's hardly practical when the blankety blank technology doesn't work. There's nothing new about this argument. The reflexive view is "But I can't get the resources I need to concentrate on really effective content until this web site starts making money. The technology I'm using has totally hamstrung the organization's sales efforts (meager traffic numbers are inevitably inaccurate, ads keep serving on the wrong pages, my databases don't work together properly -- or don't work at all)." When your technology is lame, all the noble journalism in the world won't keep your site off a cold, hard slab.

Bravo Dan!
Nearly every time I meet journalists who work on an awful Web publication, they say the same things -- "We need to redesign the home page" or "the content-management system is crap."
And what I tell them is forget about your home page. Forget about the CMS.
I tell them to learn a little html, learn some multimedia skills and concentrate on the articles.
